tUnE-yArDs teams up with ?uestlove (of The Roots), rapper Akua Naru, and African singer Angélique Kidjo for a very enjoyable cover of Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti’s Lady. It’s taken from (RED) Hot + FELA, the first collaborative compilation between (RED) and the Red Hot Organization (you will definitely know the latter from Dark Was The Night - probably the greatest compilation ever made). In the last 3 years I studied 14 modules, taking out 93 library books to write 53,753 words in 25 essays, and spent 20 hours sitting 9 exams. I paid £9,675 (in tuition fees alone) for the honour of being described as a “Bachelor of Art” in the field of History, and a nice piece of parchment which I expect to say “2:1” on, which will be handed to me ceremoniously on July 19th in a glorified sports hall, wearing some ugly material I am being forced to pay £45 to rent for two hours.

Education, eh?

The 21-year-old is not a stranger to racism and was once pelted with bananas in a Rome bar before the European Under-21 Championships in June 2009. “It was lucky that the police arrived quickly because, I swear, I would have beaten them. I would have really destroyed them. I hope it never happens again.” He has been the victim of racist abuse on several occasions – most recently in February when Porto were fined over the behaviour of their supporters in a Europa League tie against City.

The BBC aired a depressing documentary a couple of nights ago about racism in Poland and Ukraine (the Euro 2012 host nations). There were monkey chants at black players in Poland, and almost every Ukrainian football stadium they went to had whole sections of crowds doing Nazi salutes. The worst part was a clip showing Asian football fans being attacked by fans of the same team as them, simply for showing up to a game.

UEFA’s official stance is that there will be zero tolerance for any racism that occurs during the tournament, but it’s difficult to see if they will actually do anything to challenge it. Not wanting to see anyone get killed, I’m interested to see how Balotelli would react to something like this, and whether the authorities would actually do anything to help him. While we can question UEFA’s motives in allowing the tournament to take place in countries with such problems, the showcase presents an opportunity for these issues to be out in the open, and any incidents that do happen will be broadcasted across Europe and the World. Poland, Ukraine, and UEFA have a huge responsibility to ensure there is protection for black and non-white players, players’ families, and travelling fans, with appropriate punishment for those who cross the line.

Okay, so they played Niggas in Paris SIX times. That’s the same amount of times they played it in CHICAGO. But who else could get away with playing a song six times back to back?! Also, Rihanna sang on two songs with them, apparently the first time on the whole tour they’ve had a guest singer. We were stood pretty close to the VIP section, so saw Kim Kardashian, M.I.A. and Spike Lee (inorite) enjoying their spots. But the best thing about our spot was that we were at the front of the second stage, so were as close as one could have been to the two of them when they performed their songs there. As it started and Jay-Z took to the stage, I immediately started bowing down and saluting him; he legitimately looked over and laughed at me. Kanye was too cool to look down at me though, which is fair enough. £70 is a lot of money, but for 2 and half hours of “luxury rap”, hearing 20,000 people scream “DAT SHIT CRAY”, and an evening I will never forget, it was almost definitely worth it.

When I think of Jumanji, I think of this tv show. Whenever someone mentions Jumanji to me from now on, I’ll definitely think of this new Azealia Banks joint Jumanji, which was produced by Hudson Mohawke and Nick Hook and is a lot less child-friendly than the aforementioned tv show (it does have an elephant on the artwork, which somehow makes up for that). The track is set to appear on Azealia’s forthcoming mixtape Fantastic.

Fun fact: my WiFi network is also called “Jumanji”.
